How Many Times a Week Should You Do Reformer Pilates? A Guide by Goal

One of the first questions students ask when they arrive at Pinar Pilates is how many times a week they should do Pilates to see results. The answer depends on a factor many people overlook: your specific goal.

Wanting to keep a functional, pain-free body is not the same as looking for a visible physical transformation. Someone coming back from an injury is not the same as someone who already trains and wants to add Pilates to their routine. Each situation has an optimal frequency, and choosing the wrong one can mean slow results or, at the other extreme, unnecessary fatigue.

Joseph Pilates put it bluntly: “In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference, in 30 you will have a new body.” What many people do not know is that this claim was based on a regime of 3 sessions a week of 55 minutes, combined with exercises at home and applying the method’s principles in daily life. In other words, frequency was built into his own prescription.

In this guide we break down how many Pilates classes a week you need depending on what you are after, what you can expect at each level of frequency and how to fit it into the Pinar Pilates plans.

2 Times a Week: Maintenance and General Health

Key answer: For most people, practising Reformer Pilates 2 to 3 times a week is enough to see results in strength, flexibility and posture. More sessions can help depending on the goal, but consistency matters more than frequency.

If your goal is to keep a healthy body, improve your posture, gain some flexibility and have a base of functional strength, two classes a week are enough. This is the minimum effective frequency recommended by most Pilates professionals and backed by the scientific evidence.

What to expect with 2 classes a week

  • Progressive improvement in posture, especially if you spend many hours sitting.
  • Relief from neck and lower back tension built up over the week.
  • Greater body awareness and better control of movement.
  • Maintenance of flexibility and joint mobility.
  • Better sleep and lower stress levels.

A study published in the Asian Journal of Sports Medicine (Phrompaet et al., 2011) showed that with two 45-minute sessions a week for 8 weeks, participants achieved significant improvements in flexibility and lumbopelvic stability. In other words, twice a week works if you keep it up.

Typical profile

People who already feel reasonably well, who want an activity to complement their routine, professionals with tight schedules who want to look after themselves without committing too much time, or students who combine Pilates with other sports.

Recommended plan at Pinar Pilates

The 8-class monthly plan (€150) fits this frequency. That works out at €18.75 per class, with the flexibility to spread the sessions across your week. If one week you can only come once, the next you can make up for it with three.

2-3 Times a Week: Pain Relief and Rehabilitation

Key answer: For general health and toning goals, 2 sessions a week is the minimum effective frequency and 3 sessions a week is the optimum. For rehabilitation or body transformation goals, 3 to 4 sessions a week during the first 3 months speed up results noticeably.

If you come to Reformer Pilates with back pain, neck discomfort, recovering from an injury or with a condition such as a herniated disc or fibromyalgia, the recommended frequency is 2 to 3 sessions a week. This cadence lets the body adapt between sessions while keeping enough stimulus to create change.

What to expect with 2-3 classes a week

  • Progressive reduction in lower back, neck or joint pain.
  • Strengthening of the deep stabilising muscles (transversus abdominis, multifidus, pelvic floor).
  • Better mobility in areas that have lost range of movement because of the injury.
  • Regained confidence in movement, which is fundamental when pain has created a fear of moving.

Science backs this frequency. A controlled trial published in BMC Psychology (2025) showed that 6 weeks of Reformer Pilates, with two 45-minute sessions a week, produced significant improvements in pain, fear of movement, fatigue and sleep quality in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. A review by Wells et al. (2014) in PLOS ONE found similar results over periods of 4 to 15 weeks.

Typical profile

People with chronic back, neck or shoulder pain. Students in rehabilitation with medical clearance. People with fibromyalgia, osteoporosis or conditions that require supervised, low-impact exercise. If this is you, you will be interested in our guide to Reformer Pilates and back pain.

Recommended plan at Pinar Pilates

The 8-class plan (€150) covers 2 sessions a week. If your progress lets you move up to 3 sessions, the 12-class plan (€200) is the natural option, at €16.67 per class.

At Pinar Pilates our classes have a maximum of 8 people, which lets the instructors adapt the exercises to each condition and supervise execution individually. In rehabilitation, that attention is not a luxury, it is a necessity.

3-4 Times a Week: Visible Body Transformation

Key answer: Clinical trials most often use protocols of 2 to 3 sessions a week of 50 to 60 minutes. Studies show that 2 sessions produce significant improvements, but 3 sessions speed up results in strength, flexibility and body composition.

If you want visible changes in your body (toning, muscle definition, lower body fat, better body composition), you need a frequency of 3 to 4 classes a week. With two sessions you maintain; with three or four, you progress.

What to expect with 3-4 classes a week

  • A noticeable increase in muscle strength and endurance.
  • Visible changes in tone, especially in the abdomen, glutes and legs.
  • Better body composition: less fat, more muscle, better proportions.
  • Faster progression towards advanced exercises in the Reformer repertoire.
  • Postural changes that other people start to notice.

A randomised controlled trial published in Scientific Reports (2025) showed that 8 weeks of Reformer Pilates, with three sessions a week, produced significant improvements in body composition and muscle strength in overweight women. The relevant point: three sessions made the difference versus the control group, not one or two.

This is also the frequency Joseph Pilates had in mind when he made his famous claim about 10, 20 and 30 sessions. At 3 classes a week, 30 sessions equals 10 weeks. That is a realistic timeframe for seeing a real transformation, and the scientific studies confirm it.

If you want concrete examples of what is possible, see our guide to Reformer Pilates before and after.

Typical profile

People who want visible results and are willing to commit. Students who have been coming for a few weeks and want to speed up their progress. Athletes who use the Reformer as the main complement to their training.

Recommended plan at Pinar Pilates

The 12-class monthly plan (€200) is ideal for 3 sessions a week, at €16.67 per class. If your routine allows 4 sessions some weeks, the unlimited plan (€250) gives you the freedom to come without restrictions, with a cost per class that drops as you increase the frequency.

4-5 Times a Week: Maximum Results

If Reformer Pilates is your main activity and you want to get the most out of it (physically, posturally and mentally), a frequency of 4 to 5 sessions a week is optimal. This level of commitment produces accelerated changes that you notice week by week.

What to expect with 4-5 classes a week

  • Rapid progression in strength, control and exercise repertoire.
  • Visible body transformation in 4-6 weeks.
  • Mastery of advanced exercises that demand coordination, strength and stability at the same time.
  • Significant improvement in performance in other sports or activities.
  • Deep changes in posture, breathing and body awareness.

Who this frequency makes sense for

Not everyone needs or benefits from 4-5 classes a week. This frequency works well for people whose body is already adapted to Pilates (at least 2-3 months of regular practice), students who do no other intense training and can make the Reformer their main activity, or people with specific performance or fitness goals.

If you are a beginner and jump straight to 5 sessions a week, you will probably end up with accumulated fatigue and muscle soreness that stops you performing in class. Gradual progression is part of the method.

Recommended plan at Pinar Pilates

The unlimited plan (€250 a month) is the option for this frequency. If you come 4 times a week (around 16-17 classes a month), the cost per class drops to roughly €15. With 5 sessions a week (around 20 classes), it comes to about €12.50 per class. It is the most efficient rate of all the plans.

Can You Do Pilates Every Day?

It is a common question, and the answer is: you can, but it is neither necessary nor advisable for most people.

Joseph Pilates recommended practising his method daily, but there is an important nuance. He distinguished between full sessions on the Reformer and practising basic mat exercises at home. He was not proposing 7 intense Reformer sessions a week. The idea was to integrate conscious movement into the daily routine, not to hammer the machine every day.

Why rest matters

Reformer Pilates works the deep muscles with a high level of precision. Although it is low-impact exercise (no jumps or heavy loads), the muscles, connective tissues and nervous system need time to adapt and recover.

Signs that you need more rest:

  • You feel less strength or control in exercises you used to do well.
  • Muscle soreness does not go away between sessions.
  • You notice general fatigue, not only muscular.
  • Your motivation to come to class keeps dropping.

How to organise rest

If you practise 3-4 times a week, leave at least one rest day between sessions in the first months. They do not have to be days of total inactivity: walking, gentle swimming or stretching are forms of active recovery that complement Pilates.

With time and adaptation, your body will tolerate sessions on consecutive days without a problem. But even advanced practitioners benefit from at least 1-2 full rest days a week.

A good rule: if your performance in class is going down instead of up, you do not need more classes. You need more rest.

How Long Until You See Results, by Frequency

The relationship between frequency and results is not linear, but it is predictable:

Frequency First noticeable changes Visible changes Notable transformation
2 times/week 3-4 weeks 8-10 weeks 4-6 months
3 times/week 2-3 weeks 6-8 weeks 3-4 months
4-5 times/week 1-2 weeks 4-6 weeks 2-3 months

The “first noticeable changes” are internal: you feel more strength in your core, you move more fluidly, you sleep better. The “visible changes” are the ones you start to see in the mirror or that other people point out. The “notable transformation” is the point at which your body and posture look and feel truly different.

These timelines assume consistency. Two weeks of high frequency followed by a month without practice do not produce the same results as a moderate frequency kept up for months. Regularity beats intensity.

Which Frequency to Choose: A Practical Summary

Your goal Recommended frequency Pinar Pilates plan Monthly cost
Maintenance and general health 2 times/week 8 classes/month €150
Pain relief / rehabilitation 2-3 times/week 8-12 classes/month €150-200
Visible body transformation 3-4 times/week 12 classes or unlimited €200-250
Maximum results 4-5 times/week Unlimited €250

If you are not sure what your starting point is, begin with 2 sessions a week for the first month. See how your body responds. If you feel you can (and want to) do more, go up to 3. Most of our students at Pinar Pilates end up finding their ideal frequency between weeks 4 and 8.

How to Start with the Right Frequency

At Pinar Pilates, our boutique studio in the Salamanca district (Calle del Pinar 8, 28006 Madrid), we design every class so that it works whether you come 2 or 5 times a week. With groups of 8 people maximum, the instructors adapt the intensity and the exercises to your level and to how often you practise.

If you come twice a week, every session will cover a complete full-body workout. If you come four or five times, the instructors vary the focus of each class so the load is spread intelligently and your body recovers between sessions.

Our more than 490 Google reviews, with an average of 4.9 out of 5, are the best proof that this approach works.

Take the first step

You do not need to decide now whether you will come two or five times a week. What you need is a first session to feel how your body responds to the Reformer. From there, finding your ideal frequency will be much easier.
