Not all Reformer Pilates group classes are the same. In Madrid, group size varies enormously from one studio to another: from private sessions of 1 person to classes of 20 or more students. The number that appears next to “small group” on a studio’s website determines, more than any other factor, the quality of the experience you will receive.
At Pinar Pilates we work with a strict maximum of 8 people per class. It is not an arbitrary number. It is the result of balancing personal attention, group dynamics and affordability.
The Difference between 8 and 20 People per Class
Imagine a 50-minute class. The instructor needs to spend around 10-12 minutes on general explanations, demonstrations and transitions between exercises. That leaves roughly 38 minutes to watch, correct and guide individually.
With 8 students, that means almost 5 minutes of individual attention per person. Enough for 3-4 significant postural corrections during the session.
With 15 students, the time drops to 2.5 minutes per person. Barely enough for a quick correction and a general glance.
With 20 students, we are under 2 minutes. The instructor physically cannot reach everyone. Many students complete the whole class without receiving a single correction.
That difference is not only theoretical. It translates into concrete results:
- Technique: without frequent corrections, bad habits become entrenched class after class.
- Safety: a poorly executed movement on the Reformer can create tension in areas it should be relieving.
- Progression: if nobody observes your real level, exercise modifications come late or not at all.
- Motivation: feeling “invisible” in a group class reduces commitment.
Why Small Groups Speed Up Your Results
More corrections, better execution
Pilates is a method based on precision. A centimetre of difference in the position of the pelvis can completely change which muscles work. In a small group, the instructor sees that centimetre and corrects it. In a large group, it goes unnoticed.
Over time, those small corrections add up. Students who receive constant feedback develop body awareness faster and perform the exercises more effectively from the first weeks.
Better technique from day one
In groups of 8 maximum, the instructor can adapt the class to the real level of those attending. If they see that three people need a modification of the exercise, they can offer it without slowing down the group. In crowded classes, the session is pitched at the “average student” and anyone who does not fit that profile falls behind or pushes too hard.
Lower risk of injury
The Reformer is a safe tool when used correctly. But the spring resistance, the position of the feet on the bar, the alignment of the spine during each movement: all of it requires supervision, especially in the first months. In a small group, the instructor spots risky positions before they become a problem.
More confidence to ask and take part
In a group of 8 people, asking a question does not interrupt 19 classmates. The atmosphere is closer, students get to know each other and lose the fear of saying “I didn’t understand that exercise” or “this bothers me here”. That fluid communication between student and instructor is key to safe, effective practice.
Small Group vs Private Class: Which to Choose?
A private class (1:1) gives you 100% of the instructor’s attention for 50 minutes. It is ideal for rehabilitation, specific conditions or very particular needs. But it has a cost that makes it hard to sustain as regular practice: between €55 and €70 per session in Madrid.
A small group of 8 people gives you roughly 80% of the benefit of a private class at 20-25% of its cost. You receive frequent corrections, the instructor knows your body and your limitations, and the group dynamic adds an element of motivation and community that the private class does not have.
| Aspect | Private class (1:1) | Small group (8) | Large group (15-20) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual attention | 100% | ~60-70% | ~15-20% |
| Corrections per class | 10-15 | 3-5 | 0-1 |
| Exercise adaptation | Total | High | Low |
| Social component | None | High | Low (you get lost in the crowd) |
| Cost per class | €55-70 | €15-25 | €10-18 |
| Financial sustainability | Hard in the long term | Viable | Very accessible |
For most people, the small group is the smartest option. It combines quality of instruction with a price that lets you keep up the practice 2-3 times a week for months and years, which is where the real results of Pilates appear.
Our Experience with a Maximum of 8 People
At Pinar Pilates we have applied the 8-person limit from day one. Our 4.9 out of 5 on Google with more than 490 reviews confirms that the format works.
This is what happens in a typical class at our studio on Calle del Pinar 8:
- Before starting, the instructor checks whether anyone has discomfort or injuries that day. With 8 people, it is feasible. With 20, impossible.
- During the class, every student receives at least 2-3 individual corrections. The instructors (Giuliana, Gabriela, Camila, Montserrat and Abel) know their students by name and know their particularities.
- At the end, there is room for questions and comments. Many students stay a few minutes talking with the instructor about how an exercise felt or what they can do at home.
With more than 40 classes a week spread from Monday to Sunday, finding a time with availability is easy. There is no chronic waiting list and no classes full weeks in advance, a common problem in studios with very small groups of 3-4 people and a limited timetable.
We offer five class formats (Pinar Reformer, Pinar Legs, Pinar Cardio, Upper Body and Stretch) so you can vary your training without losing personal attention.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if the class has fewer than 8 people?
It runs as normal. Some classes at less popular times have 4-6 students, which becomes an even more personalised experience at the same price. We never add extra people to “fill” the class.
Does the maximum of 8 people include all levels?
Yes. Our instructors are trained to manage different levels within the same group. They offer variations of each exercise so that both a beginner and an advanced student work appropriately for their level.
How do I know you won’t raise the limit to 10 or 12 people?
The limit of 8 is tied to our physical space (we have exactly 8 Reformers) and to our working philosophy. Enlarging the group would mean compromising the quality that has earned us 4.9 out of 5 on Google. It is not in our plans.
Can I try a class before signing up?
Yes. Book your first class at 50% off to experience the small-group format for just €15. One session is enough to notice the difference of training in a group where the instructor sees you and corrects you.
